Eclectic Paperie Design Team - First Post!

I'm posting today as a member of the Eclectic Paperie design team... so honored to join this talented team! My fellow new team members, Alison Bomber and Annette Green, are also posting today so please be sure to check out their creations, too.

It was fun to rifle through the box of goodies Kim sent from EP and come up with a plan. I knew I wanted to work with an inexpensive wood framed mirror I'd picked up recently at Michael's. The new Curiosity Collection from Authentique appeals to me and I realized I could make the mirror a teacher's gift since many of the patterns are school-ish.

I used two pieces of a Maya Road triangular chipboard album to make the frame more interesting, covered them with paper, and added Wendy Vecchi's Blossom Bucket flowers to each one. This is the first time I've used the BB pieces... they're really very intricate and highly textured, yet not too heavy.  I think I want to get another set and save it to use as stamps!

After cutting squares and distressing the edges, I embellished the plain teal squares with a Market Street Stamps alpha stamp and Dyan Reavely's letters background stamp, using black archival ink.

I started thinking of this hanging in a teacher's classroom and how there are frequently motivational signs in classrooms saying things like "You're a Star Student!" so I grabbed some Maya chipboard stars and covered them with more of the patterned paper.

I picture some little cutie Kindergartener smiling at his/herself in this one.

We have a neat challenge right now over at Frilly and Funkie using a Tic Tac Toe board. Each participant gets to choose the elements she/he wants to use. Here's the inspiration board Linda Coughlin dreamed up:

I went diagonally from the top left corner, using Metal, Metallic Distress Stains, and Buttons.  I altered a canvas frame.  The canvas soaked up my blue and green distress inks beautifully.  Then I layered on some stenciling before edging all the sides and openings with Tarnished Bronze Metallic Distress Stain.  I was amazed how smoothly the metallic stain blended into the canvas.

I added paint to one of Tim's word bands and had more success than I've had before:

The trick for me was using a rag instead of a paper towel or baby wipe, and then immediately going around the words with a Q-tip I had "dipped" into a baby wipe. Weird, I know, but so much more effective than previous attempts.

Last step was to adhere the required buttons with Matte Medium, which dries clear. Now I'm in the mood for more altering!

The Kathryn Wheel, Part 11

Time to share my November page for Kate Crane's calendar project. I've used Tim Holtz's Faux Embossed Metal technique on this one, with lots of Perfect Pearls Mists from Ranger. In fact, pearls are the theme right now over at Simon Says Stamp & Show.

The shine on this one is pretty intense. I used Tim's Sizzix ticket dies and stamps on grey card stock to tone it down a bit. I have a full tutorial featured over on the Frilly and Funkie blog today showing how it came together.

Power Out, Day 5

We lost power on Monday and I'll be honest... it isn't fun anymore. My heart goes out to all those who had serious loss and damages... by comparison, we are very lucky. But now it's not just dark, it's cold and dark and we had to empty the fridge and freezer and throw out all our food.  

Yesterday we gave up on our cold dark NY house yesterday and moved for a few days to the warmth and light (and power!) at my sister and brother-in-law's home. I thought my blogging pals would get a chuckle seeing what I meticulously packed for the time away.  Every cloud has a silver lining seeing as how I got to bring my stamping goodies along.

I have a scheduled post ready for tomorrow, and hope to get back to normal next week. Right now the power company says to plan for another week of darkness.  It's nearly impossible to imagine and yet I know down in New Orleans and Haiti people have dealt with all this before, not to mention other parts of the world.

The Kathryn Wheel, Part 10

Here's a new page for my version of Kate Crane's calendar project. I'm also joining Linda Ledbetter's StudioL3 challenge and the current challenges at Simon Says Stamp and Show and Paper Issues. Linda's challenge is based on Tim Holtz's book, the Compendium of Curiosities Volume 2, and this week the focus is on Distress Markers.  I used the second of the two techniques Tim outlines on page 50 for this page.

The focus on my page is the new leaf stamps designed by Mario Rossi III.  I love the blueprint measurements he's included around them.... so unique! I've used the Sizzix Word Play and Hexagon dies, and dry embossed the letters for added texture. 

The markers are reactive to water and you can really do some awesome coloring with them. I finished the page up with some favorite stamps and stencils.

Crazy Lady published in the new Stampers' Sampler

I was so psyched to see that The Stampers' Sampler accepted a piece I sent in for their torso template challenge! Mine is the one on the left. I made this with their torso template and a combination of stamps, distress inks, archival inks, distress markers, and Tim Holtz's (Sizzix) clock/time embossing folder.

Hinged Tags and Great Outdoors Challenge

 

This week at Frilly and Funkie we're looking for projects that focus on the outdoors or nature, and include a quote about either topic.  I've combined my design team piece for F&F with the Compendium of Curiosites challenge over at Studio L3, which is Enameled Stamping. My technique for CofC is on the second, larger tag.

I started by stamping the skinny Hero Arts butterfly stamp repeatedly on the smaller tag and coloring in the butterflies with Distress Markers.  Then I swiped bundled sage and antique linen distress inks over it, pressed the whole thing into a Versamark pad, and heat embossed with clear powder. I repeated the embossing several times to build up a thick gloss. I did the same to the butterflies and the diecut mini label (which I ran through my printer):

You can find the how-to of the Enameled Stamping technique on page 44 of Tim Holtz's book, The Compendium of Curiosities, Vol 2.  I used Tim's Papillon stamps for the background and some of the butterflies, as well as others by Stampers Anonymous, Wendy Vecchi and Hero Arts.  

The hinges are from Linda Coughlin's shop (The Funkie Junkie Boutique) and I distressed them with Vintaj inks to match my tags. I used tiny Basic Grey magnets to hold the weight of the top tag evenly onto the jumbo tag. I enjoyed stacking the butterflies above and between the tags, with some coming off the paper and some grounded:

Donna Downey's Altered Brush Project

When altered paint brushes bound for North Carolina started popping up on so many blogs I follow, I was intrigued... so I played along with Donna Downey and made one to help decorate her new studio walls.

I first met Donna at scrapbooking classes organized by Creating Keepsakes a zillion years ago, and since then I've taken many of her online classes. I hope someday to get to the new studio and take classes in person. 

Donna has  weekely feature on her blog called "Inspiration Wednesday" where she shares free how-to videos.  She'll knock your socks off!

For my brush I used Tim's Sizzix heart cut out of grunge paper. I added three metal clips painted with acrylic paints, and stamped the silver/metal part of the brush with alcohol inks to get the blue patina. I typed the words on my typewriter (for real) and stamped the letters with a Studio 490 background stamp.  Lots more blue and black paint finished it off.

The Kathryn Wheel, Part 9

 

Welcome, old friends and new. I'm so happy to see several new followers have joined the blog... I really do appreciate all of your support.  Today it's time to turn the page again on Kate Crane's calendar project.

I made the September page with a combination of paints, gelatos, distress and archival inks, and of course lots of stamps and stencils. The squares are punched from Bo Bunny ledger paper. Here's a peek at the completed August page: 

Here in New York my boys are enjoying two more days of freedom before school starts. They don't even want to say the word September.

Kraft Resist Matchbox Notebook

Today I'm combining the Frilly and Funkie challenge with the Compendium of Curiosities challenge, featuring Tim Holtz's Kraft Resist techniques.  I've made a mini notebook with the Sizzix matchbox die (the pages are a pack of post-its.)

The Kraft Resist papers take distress inks like buttah. The more you add, the richer the color. Here's a link to a video Tim shared last week with loads of ideas on using the kraft resist papers.

I made two cuts with the matchbox die and colored each before gluing them together, so the inside would be as finished as the outside. Here's a pic of the inside. I intended to use the small heart die (shown below), but it ended up being too small, so I cut the larger version and used it instead. It's backed with another heart cut from black card.

The Typeset alpha die is one of my favorites because it includes both upper and lower case, and you can mix and match as desired. I didn't want my letters to appear to be floating, so I used some of Linda's burlap string to ground them.  

I stapled the string with Tim's Tiny Attacher (love this tool!) and then used the large heart to cover the staples. I was wondering how to hide the staples showing through on the inside, and then I remembered the smaller heart... what a cool save!

Now the inside looks really nice when I open it up to grab a post-it. Here's a peek inside and a close-up of the cover:
