This week's Frilly & Funkie challenge calls for repurposing at least two things on the project of your choice. Last week the frilly side of the design team posted their projects, and this week my funkie cohorts and I get a turn.
Before I go into the project I just want to remind you the Frilly & Funkie challenges are sponsored by The Funkie Junkie's Boutique, and each week a random prize winner receives a store credit and a second winner is chosen by the design team. We're thrilled with all the support being shown our new blog! Besides the bi-monthly Wednesday challenges, we have special posts each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday sharing tips, demos, and discounts.
I chose this shadow box frame that I'd tried to jazz up sometime last year. Forgot to take a before pic. I started by coating it with matte medium and applying plain brown burlap strips. I spritzed those with Dylusions Ink Sprays and it immediately looked better. I recently bought a bunch of the new Tim Holtz water brushes after seeing Dyan Reaveley use them in class, and I realized they'd be perfect to color the tiny bits of frayed burlap that I missed with the mist. I filled the water brushes with Dyan's ink sprays using a pipette:

Go ahead and laugh at the little post-it that says "take before pic!" Love it when reminders are right there where they should be, yet still get overlooked.
Anyway, I now have my own stash of Dylusions Ink Spray paintbrushes... how cool is that? You can control the volume of color used, your fingers don't turn colors, you can do fine detail work with all those gorgeous colors... the list goes on and on. Linda's prices really are the best I've seen anywhere on these and many other Ranger products... check out her boutique!
I played with beeswax over the weekend and did all the flowers then. My new kick is to have a basket full of stamped images that need cutting, and to keep my hands busy while watching TV. It was a great time saver to be be able to grab those pre-cut flowers and get right to it when the mood struck.
The flower stamps are by Studio 490 and Outlines, stamped in black archival ink on Ranger's manila card stock. I colored them with distress inks using an ink blending tool and dipped them in the wax. I cut the Sizzix flourishes out of manila card stock and dyed with coffee archival ink. The butterfly is stamped twice in black archival ink and heat embossed with clear powder. I attached a scrap of Wendy Vecchi's Clearly for Art to it, heated it, and was able to bend the wings and keep them upright. The butterfly and the panel behind it are colored with distress inks.
My second piece of repurposing is just plain old packaging... I used it to get a preview on what my border stamp might look like (in this case, for the zigzag stitching). Just stamp your image with archival ink on the plastic and hold it over your project to see if you really want it there before commiting. It's great because you can move it around till you find the right spot:

This week I'm joining in at Our Creative Corner, Fashionable Stamping Challenges, and the Sizzix blog.
Hope to see you over at Frilly & Funkie... this challenge is open through Tuesday, May 1st. I appreciate your visiting today. Have a great one!
