Frilly & Funkie Challenge: Hide It

 

The current challenge at Frilly and Funkie is Anything but a Card ~ With a Twist... you need to hide something somewhere on your piece.  I'll admit, that gave me pause but I like it when challenges do that. On Monday I saw that Wendy Vecchi is the focus at Simon Says Stamp and Show this week, and her funky crowned lady came right to mind. I double stamped the crown and used a brad to make it a moving part to reveal my hidden word:

The tag is colored with distress stain and distress inks, and has lots of Wendy's background stamps and some stencils on it. I used Tim' Idea-ology word band on the bottom (colored with paint) and a Chitchat sticker for the word on her crown (colored with distress inks.)  

I stamped the face/crown on Ranger's Specialty Stamping Paper and colored it with distress inks.  I sprayed Linda's jute mesh with Dylusions Ink Sprays, as well as the seam binding serving as ribbon on top.  The blue flowers are oldies from my stash that now match my tag thanks to dusty concord distress ink.

Art Journal Page: Starting Point

I'm finishing up an amazing online class taught by Kelly Rae Roberts called Flying Lessons. It's about building a creative business and the course content has given me a super charge every day for the last 5 weeks.  So much to think about!

One recurring theme on the class 'boards' was people expressing concern about being ready, about having it all together (whatever it may be for each of us... we are a varied lot of writers, artists, quilters, painters, photographers, jewelry makers, etc.) There are so many possibilities to consider besides the blog... websites, online and offline shops, craft shows, publications, etc.

Kelly suggested there will never be a time when all our ducks are in a row... we should just start. Her words: "Embrace your starting point!" With that in mind, I had fun stepping away from the learning and making this page for the Simon Says Stamp and Show challenge this week. I made this while watching the bold backgrounds chapter of Kate Crane's new dvd... what a treat that is! Kate shares loads of tips and techniques and I learned a ton watching it.

Hard to pick a 'favorite' but I count Dylusions Ink Sprays and stencils as some of my all-time faves. The arrows are a fun mix of chipboard, stamps, stencils, and rub-ons. And going with progress not perfection, I didn't freak out when I stamped one of the letters wrong.  It's all okay!

My starting point is expanding as I am working to open at Etsy shop. It's quite a learning curve and I'm looking forward to figuring it all out!

Art Journal page: Random Thoughts

I had so much fun making this spread in my journal.... it's got a ton of layers and as my friend Lynne says, you can't fake layers. There's something really satisfying about building them up.

I started with some of Tim's grunge letters and embedded them in a thick coat of gesso. I really spackled it on and had to let it dry for nearly two days.  Here's how it looked in the early stages:

I attached several torn pieces of book text for Simon Says Stamp and Show and started building up color with paints, gelatos, and ink sprays.  I quickly veered away from the bright colors and ended up with a rich mix of orange, rust, purple, brown and black. Water soluble oil pastels helped with that and it all blended pretty well:

All the texture from the gesso still shows. I've never put it on so roughly before, and I definitely want to do it this way more often. I used some favorite word stamps (serious and silly) and lots of stencils, too. 

I paired a Teesha Moore face (stamped repeatedly) with a favorite Tim stamp.

You have to wonder, don't you? Besides using that stamp from my old-time stash, I broke in a new stencil that's been waiting for awhile - Julie's splat stencil - which I used for the September challenge (Splatters and Speckles) at The Artistic Stamper. 

I've been experimenting with photo size and would love to know if you had any trouble opening this post. The first photo up top is 'full size' which is not a size I've used in my posts before, and the rest are all a size larger than normal.  If it's too hard to open, I'll do more tweaking.

Wendy Vecchi Challenge #49: Use Canvas

This week we're prompted to use canvas and at least one Studio 490 stamp in the Wendy Vecchi yahoo group challenge.

I've used Claudine's Sticky Back Canvas and Tim's (Sizzix) flourish die for mine. 

I was inspired by Julia's recent creation to use an On-the-Edge Sizzix die as a hanging border; I used the iron gate for mine and attached it with XL eyelets using the Crop-o-Dile.

I've used lots of lots of Wendy's Studio 490 stamps on this one along with distress and archival inks.  

The large flourish stamp is Tim's and thebird is a favorite from Stampers Anonymous.

Simon Says Stamp and Show has No Rules this week, so I'll enter this there as well.

Frilly & Funkie Challenge: Canvas

We are using canvas for the current challenge over at Frilly and Funkie... hope you'll join us! You can use it in small parts or pieces, or as a whole stand-alone piece.  I went with an 8X8 canvas and included a small (3"X3") one on top of it.  I used so many color agents my work table looks a bit like a bomb went off... paints, distress inks, archival inks, gelatos, and Vintaj paintas.  

Simon Says Stamp & Show has a 'favorite technique' theme going, and for me it's been stencils for a long time now.  I seem to need a stencil somewhere on each piece!  In this case I used four. Also lots of stamps, and a combo of lettering.  

Dina Wakley is doing an Art Journaling on Canvas series this month, and I'm sharing this as my second play-along with her. Really looking forward to taking classes with her again next month at The Ink Pad in NYC.

The big "D" stamp is an old favorite by Stampers Anonymous, stamped on Ranger's manila card stock and colored with distress inks.  The metal heart is Vintaj, colored with Verdigris patina plus black paint. I adhered it to the mini canvas with one of Tim's tiny brads, colored the same way. I like how it's hanging off the edge:

The corners are filigree metals from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.  I colored them with the Verdigris patina and then rubbed in some brown and black distress inks. I am amazed at the finish. This was my first time using the Vintaj products.  I have to say, I really like them. I cut the corrugated cardboard letters from Tim's Sizzix Word Play die and inked them with distress inks and paints. The "&" looked lost on the background so I gave it a little mat. Here's another look:

Those scrabble letters have been in my stash a long time.  I don't know who makes them but I liked their 3D nature for this canvas.

Art Journaling: To Turn Back Time

- Take one challenge from Simon Says Stamp and Show (use paint)

- Add the prompt from Art Journal Cafe (if you could choose a super power, what would it be?)

- Choose power and colors. Pull art journal, paints, gesso, Sizzix weathered clock die, chipboard letters, and loads of stamps and inks.  I christened my new Lynn Perella stamps on this and used several old favorites too.  Here are a few close-ups of the texture:

Simon Says Stamp and Show - Sentiments

I'm joining the Simon Says Stamp & Show challenge today, where they're looking for sentiments.  I've used one of Dyan Reaveley's great sayings along with a Teesha Moore stamped girl.  I love that image!  

I got the Teesha stamp online but on Saturday I took a class at The Ink Pad in NYC (Kelly Kilmer, collage artist - very cool) and picked up new stamps there too, so loads of options await me.

Used lots of Ranger Distress Inks and stamps by Tim Holtz, Lost Coast Designs, Teesha and Dyan.  Added a bit of black enamel accents to finish off my border stamp.

Fashionable Stamping Challenges has an Anything Goes theme this week, and they're celebrating their first anniversary too.

Compendium Challenge #13 - Spritz & Flick Distress

This week’s challenge at Studio L3, sponsored by Simon Says Stamp, is based on Tim Holtz’s Spritz & Flick Distress technique.  It’s found on page 42 of the Compendium of Curiosities II.  I used the S&F technique after coloring the base of my tag, but once I added lots of additional stamping it became a bit hard to see.  Trust me, though… it’s there! 

I used mustard seed, barn door, and three different orange distress inks, plus Monarch Orange and Jet Black archival inks.  Lots of Tim’s stamps and some of Dyan’s too.  I stamped Dyan's  hearts and arrows onto separate manila card stock, and cut and colored them before attaching to the tag.  I used Tim's Idea-ology letters and attached a tiny tag with jump rings and a velvet ribbon.

I'll also enter this at Simon Says Stamp and Show, which has no rules/anything goes this week.

Simon Says Stamp & Show - One for the Boys

 

Fun theme this week at Simon Says Stamp and Show! 

Ever since Shelly Hickox posted this project last week I've wanted to do something with foil tape and alcohol inks. Shelly's work is amazing... check out her blog!

Tim got me past my fear of things that shine a few weeks ago when we made this project in class.

I used the honeycomb embossing folder on my foil tape letters with alcohol inks. I love that folder so much it's scary. I'm not kidding. And with Shelly's drip and dry technique, the raised areas of the EF seemed to hold the colors in place.

I used the gears dies and the new tiny metal Idea-ology ones, and just had fun with this tag.  My big work space was down to about a 6" square because I had so much stuff out to play.

I used tiny alphabet stamps to spell out "Let's hear it for" and a large music stamp background, and added a second tag (black) offset behind the main one before attaching the diecut gears on top.

Alter It!

This week at Frilly and Funkie we'd love to see you transform something. Sue Carrington's our host and her project is a real stunner.  Whether you have something laying around the house or something you've purchased specifically to alter, we'd love to see what you make of it.  And remember... there's a gift certificate to Linda Coughlin's Funkie Junkie Boutique for a random winner. 

I have many things I've picked up with altering in mind, and this faux book has been waiting around for a long while.  Here's what it looked like to start:

I had at it with my Dyan Reaveley Ink Sprays and liberal spritzes of water. I love these sprays... the colors are just fantastic!  I then stamped Tim's Papillon script stamp repeatedly in Vermillion Archival Ink and inked all the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

I will be using this faux book as a tabletop box for special pens and my water brush markers (which are filled with Dyan's sprays for more detailed application.)  

I also used Linda's corrugated kraft paper that I ran through the Vagabond with one of Tim's on-the-edge dies, three colors of Linda's burlap string, and giant eyelets from my Crop-o-Dile set.

I didn't want a title on it so I could change my mind on storing it vertically or horizontally, but I definitely wanted to decorate the spine.  I used two of Linda's filigree pieces attached with brads. The filigree pieces are thin enough that they're easy to bend:

 

Besides the brad, I used several tiny rolled up glue dots to secure them.  I lined the inside with a page from one of the Stampington pubs designed by Chrysti Hydeck:

I love her style, and it was a joy to fill the box/book with something that I find so totally visually appealing.  Hope to see your new altered creation at Frilly & Funkie!

I'll also put this in at Simon Says Stamp and Show, where the theme is favorite stamps... Tim's Papillon will always be one of mine.  I know the image is subtle here, but that's the cool thing about stamping.  It can still be your fave without being dominant.
