Gelatos by Faber-Castell are my new favorite kick for color. They look like little lipsticks and you rub on the color like it's a crayon and then add water:

                        

I use my fingers.  After building up the colors with a variety of blues, white, and a purple, I added more color with distress inks and stencils before stamping all my vines in jet black archival:

I cut and stamped flowers, then made a paste with a bit of gelato + water by cutting a tiny bit off the stick and saturating it in water:

              

I used it to color my flowers, adding variety in the intensity of each. I attached some flat to the page and some raised up on glue dots for dimesion, adding some interest to the centers of most.  The letters are Tim's Sizzix alpha Carnivale die.

The package says gelatos are also very good on dark papers, which I haven't tried yet.  I'm sharing this with Art Journal Every Day.

Wendy Vecchi Challenge #50

Here's my entry for the 50th Making Art Challege at the Wendy Vecchi yahoo group. I want to give a big shout out to Lori Hassler for starting these challenges about 18 months ago. I've participated in 46 of the 50 challenges... so it's fair to say I'm a big fan. (And yes it's strange I know that, but I keep a list on my computer of several challenge themes/deadlines, so it was easy to count.) Props to Lori for the continued creative prompts and for making the yahoo group a really supportive and fun place to meet. All are welcome and it's a low-volume, no-pressure group.

For this challenge we used Tim Holtz's Stamptember video as a starting point. After following Tim's technique with distress stains, I used loads of Wendy's Studio 490 stamps to build up a background, then added a Crafter's Workshop number stencil over the extra large tag.

I wanted to use Wendy's new flower stencil as a focal point. I didn't realize when I ordered it that it's perfectly sized to fit the standard tag.  Love that! I colored it with a combo of distress markers (flower) and archival ink (stem/leaves).

I also used four Sizzix dies (ticket, mini tag, alphabet, and Cargo stencil).  After stamping to my heart's content and adhering the letters, I heat embossed each piece three times with UTEE and called it a day. Here's a peek at all the pieces:

I ended up not using the tiny oval tag. Speaking of tags... that's the theme over at Paper Issues right now, another great challenge blog.

Hinged Tags and Great Outdoors Challenge

 

This week at Frilly and Funkie we're looking for projects that focus on the outdoors or nature, and include a quote about either topic.  I've combined my design team piece for F&F with the Compendium of Curiosites challenge over at Studio L3, which is Enameled Stamping. My technique for CofC is on the second, larger tag.

I started by stamping the skinny Hero Arts butterfly stamp repeatedly on the smaller tag and coloring in the butterflies with Distress Markers.  Then I swiped bundled sage and antique linen distress inks over it, pressed the whole thing into a Versamark pad, and heat embossed with clear powder. I repeated the embossing several times to build up a thick gloss. I did the same to the butterflies and the diecut mini label (which I ran through my printer):

You can find the how-to of the Enameled Stamping technique on page 44 of Tim Holtz's book, The Compendium of Curiosities, Vol 2.  I used Tim's Papillon stamps for the background and some of the butterflies, as well as others by Stampers Anonymous, Wendy Vecchi and Hero Arts.  

The hinges are from Linda Coughlin's shop (The Funkie Junkie Boutique) and I distressed them with Vintaj inks to match my tags. I used tiny Basic Grey magnets to hold the weight of the top tag evenly onto the jumbo tag. I enjoyed stacking the butterflies above and between the tags, with some coming off the paper and some grounded:

Donna Downey's Altered Brush Project

When altered paint brushes bound for North Carolina started popping up on so many blogs I follow, I was intrigued... so I played along with Donna Downey and made one to help decorate her new studio walls.

I first met Donna at scrapbooking classes organized by Creating Keepsakes a zillion years ago, and since then I've taken many of her online classes. I hope someday to get to the new studio and take classes in person. 

Donna has  weekely feature on her blog called "Inspiration Wednesday" where she shares free how-to videos.  She'll knock your socks off!

For my brush I used Tim's Sizzix heart cut out of grunge paper. I added three metal clips painted with acrylic paints, and stamped the silver/metal part of the brush with alcohol inks to get the blue patina. I typed the words on my typewriter (for real) and stamped the letters with a Studio 490 background stamp.  Lots more blue and black paint finished it off.

Wendy Vecchi Challenge #49: Use Canvas

This week we're prompted to use canvas and at least one Studio 490 stamp in the Wendy Vecchi yahoo group challenge.

I've used Claudine's Sticky Back Canvas and Tim's (Sizzix) flourish die for mine. 

I was inspired by Julia's recent creation to use an On-the-Edge Sizzix die as a hanging border; I used the iron gate for mine and attached it with XL eyelets using the Crop-o-Dile.

I've used lots of lots of Wendy's Studio 490 stamps on this one along with distress and archival inks.  

The large flourish stamp is Tim's and thebird is a favorite from Stampers Anonymous.

Simon Says Stamp and Show has No Rules this week, so I'll enter this there as well.

Wendy Vecchi Challenge #48

This week the Wendy Vecchi yahoo group has a 2-part challenge: use a watch face and tissue tape (and of course, at least one of Wendy's Studio 490 stamps). I pulled out my art journal and inked the page with several distress inks, then used three of Wendy's stamps to build up the backgroud.  

I used washi and tissue tapes, stencils, and clock parts from my stash. The clock parts reminded me of the sun so I added Ranger's black enamel accents as rays going towards Wendy's silhouette woman.

I love that stamp. I didn't get a great impression so I went over her with some black paint. I see now I could've had a lighter hand... she looks like she's been working out a bit too hard on her left arm! The sentiment is also a Studio 490 stamp and it goes with the time theme.

Compendium Challenge - Perfect Pearls Mists

Linda has a product challenge this week at StudioL3, asking us to use one of the Perfect Pearls Mists techniques from Tim Holtz's book, Compendium of Curiosities, II. I used my mists on flowers I'd cut from the Sizzix Tattered Florals die. The letters are all jet black (paper or plastic) but the photo seems to show them differently.

I'm also participating in Dina Wakley's Out of the Art Journal canvas challenge this month. I covered my 12X12 canvas with several layers of paint and used Crafter's Workshop stencils here and there.

The large letters are ancient Sizzix "Bigs" letters, that I still love. I ran the flowers and large letters through multiple Sizzix texture fades, and added Wendy Vecchi's Clearly for Art modeling film to the backs of some of the flowers.  After it dried I heated them and was able to curl the petals as desired.  The XL leaf/stem stamp is a big foam one from Donna Downey, and the metal corners and black plastic letters are Tim's Idea-ology. (Those small plastic letters are just as black as the large paper ones, but the plastic texture shows differently in the photo.)

This was really fun to make and I am hoping to continue with Dina's challenge to make a canvas a week for this month.  Thank you so much for the visit.  Have a great week!

Vitruvian Man meets Dyan Reaveley

 

Anita Houston is hosting the current challenge at Frilly & Funkie and the theme is Renaissance Men. We're to pay homage to one of the big four (Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo, or Raphael) with a project depicting one of their works, being sure to name it and the artist. You can be inspired in any way by their works -- you don't have to mimic them -- but I decided to use stamps to recreate Da Vinci's illustration of the Vitruvian Man.

Remember this sketch?  It was all about symmetry and proportion, and he used text at the top and bottom. I started with an 8X10 art journal page I'd been building up for a few weeks. It's painted and sprayed with Dylusions ink sprays, and has bits and pieces attached from tags that hadn't panned out for other projects:

I went through my stash of people stamps and chose a plain body by Limited Edition and one of the faces from Dyan's stamps.

 

Colored the body with mustard seed, spiced marmalade, and ripe persimmons distress inks and the face and hair with antique linen distress ink and distress markers.  I used Tim's stamps to dress her up.  Then I went to town on the page with paints, sprays, stamps, and stencils.

After tracing the circle I perched her on top of a tag remnant at the bottom and added one of Dyan's birds on top.  I cut the letters from Tim's Sizzix Chip Block die, stamped them with the mini Papillon, and colored them the same as the body.

I edged the page and the lovely lady with black gesso and used a bit of red line tape to secure her torso and a few limbs, leaving some free. Her head is popped up a bit with foam.  Brads secured the parts so I could move them around before gluing.

Wendy Vecchi Group Challenge #46

I'm playing along today with the Wendy Vecchi Yahoo Group, where this week we're to use a circular base, three buttons, and at least one of Wendy's Studio 490 stamps.  I started with a round Art Part base and covered it with paper from Stampington.  I stamped the paper with Wendy's  background stamps and also used her hand and sentiment.

The butterfly is one of Tim's Sizzix dies and the frame around the sentiment is another Art Part.  Buttons, brads, bling, spinner and ribbon from stash.
